Platon Lebedev to donate Strasbourg compensation to charity
On 2 June a ruling of the European Court of Human Rights instructing the Russian authorities to pay Lebedev 10,000 euros came into force
“On 2 June 2008 the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights on my first complaint to that court came into force. The ruling recognised that my rights, as guaranteed by the Constitution, had in a great number of cases been violated by the Russian authorities and obligated Russia to pay me 10,000 euros by way of compensation.
“I would like, once again, to declare that the purpose of my lawsuit in the European Court was motivated exclusively by the desire to gain justice and objectivity in assessing how my rights had been respected during the course of the investigation and the trial. The size of the monetary compensation is of no significance to me. In view of this I have decided to donate the monetary compensation awarded to me by the European Court’s ruling for charitable purposes.
“I have instructed my lawyers to transfer half of the sum to the Podmoskovny Lyceum in Koralovo and the other half to the Sakharov Museum. These sums will be transferred by my lawyers as soon as I receive the funds I have been awarded.”
