Let's support children from Podmoskovny Lyceum!
THE PODMOSKOVNY LYCEUM
& Boarding School
The Podmoskovny Lyceum in Koralovo, forty kilometres from Moscow, was founded in 1994 as a privately-funded, independently-run school, affiliated to the Institute of Technology. Its purpose is to provide an education and upbringing, free of charge, for orphans and children from socially disadvantaged families.
Our children
We care particularly for those left without parents and for young members of single-parent families where there are many children.
Currently, one hundred and sixty five children from the age of 12 upwards attend the Lyceum. They come from Moscow and from other parts of Russia, above all those regions where Yukos plc was active: Samara, Tyumen, Tomsk, Irkutsk and Krasnoyarsk.
Entry is by written and oral examination. Among successful candidates priority is given: to children whose fathers have been killed serving in the border forces or died at one of the Yukos company’s enterprises; those whose fathers are currently serving as Russian border guards in “local conflict” zones (e.g. Tajikistan, the Caucasus region); as well as children from one-parent families, households were there are many children, or families in which both parents work in the state sector as school teachers, doctors and so on. There are also some unfortunate youngsters who since the late 1990s have endured the horror of terrorist attacks in Kaspisk, the “Nord-Ost” theatre siege and Beslan.
On joining the school, a formal agreement is reached with the parents or guardians, specifying their rights and those of the school.
The conditions in which the children then live and are taught are unique. They enable our pupils to gain extremely high levels of education and continue their studies after graduating. Even more important, our school helps these otherwise disadvantaged and needy children to become worthy citizens of the new Russia.
Our educational principles
The children at the Lyceum live and study in an atmosphere of warmth, care and support. No one discourages their self-expression. Every child feels secure and valued. Each enjoys the freedom to choose among the available educational courses and extra-curricular activities and is free to study at his or her own pace. They are taught to compete against themselves, not each other, overcoming difficulties and correcting their own mistakes — the Lyceum does not apply the system of negative grades.
In 2005 two of our 31 graduates received the Lyceum’s coveted golden medal, given for “excellent” final marks in all subjects. Five more received silver medals, which are given for a “good” final mark during their entire period of study at the school. Thus far, every one of our children has found a place in institutions of higher education on leaving the Lyceum. In 2006 one of our thirty graduates was awarded a gold medal and four gained a silver medal. In 2007 one of Koralovo’s leaving class gained a gold medal and three were silver medallists.
Our organisation
The school principal is Boris Khodorkovsky. His wife Marina is a member of the board of trustees.
Regular inspections and reviews of the Lyceum’s activities, including visits from organizations abroad, confirm our exceptional standards of education, upbringing and accommodation.
The school was formally recognised by the Moscow Registration Chamber as an educational institution on 22 September 1998 and its registration details were again updated on 24 December 2001.
